Francis Home and Joseph Black: the Chemistry and Testing of Alkaline Salts in the Early Bleaching and Alkali Trade

چکیده

This paper considers the analytical work of two chemists in Scotland during the second half of the 18 century. It examines their efforts to understand and determine the strength of alkaline salts at a time when quantitative analytical measurement was beginning to be made in a form recognizable by present day chemists. In this period atomic weights and chemical formulae, which we now regard as essential aids in analysis, had not come into being. There is therefore a temptation for present day chemists to regard the period as one in which quantitative chemical analysis seemed almost impossible. It will be shown however that the analytical methods and chemical thinking of Francis Home (1719-1813) and Joseph Black (1728-1799) were adequate for the needs of the early alkali trade and the use of these alkaline materials in bleaching.

Isolation and Structural Characterization of Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metal Salts with Synthetic Non Cyclic Ionophores

In the present study, an investigation on the complex formation between mono- and divalent metal ions (Na+, K+, Li+ and Mg2+) in the form of salt with different podands using various solvents has been carried out.  Isolated complexes were characterized by different spectroscopic techniques viz. IR, NMR and elemental analysis. On the basis of ...

ON THE COMPLEXING ABILITY OF ERIOCHROME BLACK T AS A METALLOCHROMIC INDICATOR FOR SOME ALKALI AND ALKALINE EARTH CATIONS IN ACETONE AND DIMETHYLSULPHOXIDE SOLUTIONS

The interaction between eriochrome black T and Li , Na , K ,Mg and Ca ions in acetone and dimethylsulphoxide solutions has been investigated spectrophotometrically. The formation constants of the resulting 1 : 1 complexes were determined and found to decrease in the order Mg >Ca >Li >K >Na in both solvents used. There is an inverse relationship between the stabilities of the complexes...

مقایسه اثر روش‌های آماده‌سازی بذر اسپرس بر بهبود تحمل تنش قلیایی و بازیابی آن

Germination is the first and the most stages for sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) growth; which it has especially sensitivity to environmental stresses such as alkalinity. The current study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of seed pre-treatment methods on improving sainfoin tolerance to alkali stress in germination, early growth and its recovery as a factorial experiment based o...

Petrography, whole-rock geochemistry and mineral chemistry of clinopyroxene and amphibole in basic alkaline igneous rocks of Shemshak Formation, S Azadshahr, Eastern Alborz

At the base of Shemshak Formation in the south Azadshahr area, some igneous mafic rocks are discovered recently  as olivine gabbro bodies and pegmatoid alkali-diorite dikes. Rock-forming minerals of olivine gabbro includes olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase, alkali-diorites are composed of large amphiboles and plagioclase. Major and trace elements characteristics of these rocks indicate the...

Comparison of Catalytic Effect of Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metals Hydrogen Sulfate: As the Promoter for an Efficient Synthesis of 3,4-Dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones under Solvent-Free Conditions

Alkali and alkaline earth metals hydrogen sulfate catalyzed the one-pot three component condensation reactions of aldehydes, 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and urea or thiourea under solvent-free conditions leading to 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones in high yields at 80 °C. Our results showed that Biginelli reaction not only is pH dependent, but the cation of catalyst plays an importan...
